In recent years, the Basque audiovisual sector has received a boost thanks to the creation and consolidation of film-related entities and the success of local film productions.
Basque Association of Private Cinemas. Association of privately managed theatres and cinemas in the Basque Autonomous Community whose aim is to unite interests and promote creativity and cultural diversity.
Basque public television, created in 1982 as the first network to broadcast in Basque. Today EITB has four channels: ETB1, in Basque; ETB2, in Spanish; ETB3, children´s channel in Basque, and ETB4, offering in-house produced entertainment.
The University of Mondragon´s Faculty of Humanities and Educational Sciences, HUHEZI, created the Huhezinema Basque Short Film Festival in 2008. Fourth year Audiovisual Studies students have been working collaboratively on this festival ever since.
Held in Lekeitio every year, this festival is a celebration of the Basque language and cinema, bringing together the audiovisual sector of the Basque Country and creating a space for professionals and film enthusiasts alike.
This festival takes place in Vitoria-Gasteiz and is the only one in Spain that includes all the formats of television production, mainly game shows, news magazines, TV series, culture, programs with educational and social content, and entertainment shows.
The International Unseen Film Festival ´Film Sozialak´ was created in Bilbao to bring films to the cinema that are not often seen on conventional screens and invite audiences to help build a better world.
The San Sebastian International Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals in Europe and the longest running in the Basque Country. The festival has attracted such powerhouse names as Richard Gere, Glenn Close and Denzel Washington.
