Basque. Playlist. #4 - Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado

09 Jun 2023

Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado were founded in 2011 in San Francisco, California. The group formed by San Sebastian musicians Koldo Soret and Usua de la Fuente released their first album in 2013 under the name ´Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado´.

Since their formation, the band has performed concerts in various locations worldwide, including the Basque Country, United States, Mexico, Japan, France, and Italy. Their musical style can be described as rock, leaning towards the harder side with a touch of stoner influence. The band consists of guitar, drums, and vocals. They have even been compared to the Basque equivalent of the American band, The White Stripes.

To date, the band has released four albums, featuring a discography that comprises both instrumental tracks and songs with lyrics in Basque.

In their most recent release, ´Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado Vs Don Cóndor y Ñora Alacrán´ (2022), the band has embraced elements of cumbia and surf music while staying true to their rock roots. This fusion allows them to explore new musical territories without losing their distinctive essence. In this album, the band has incorporated a range of instruments, including bass, guitar, accordion, cowbell, güiro, palo de agua, and more. The result is a captivating fusion of Mexican-inspired melodies, electronic music, and rock elements.

Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado stands as one of the most innovative and captivating rock-and-roll projects within the Basque music scene. Their track record clearly demonstrates their ability to garner interest and establish themselves as a point of reference beyond the borders of the Basque Country.

Alain Urrutia, challenging the passage of time

On one wall of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao hang 40 small paintings. Facing us, we see a landscape or a sparrow, a gaze, a feather, and a mirror reflecting the visitor in 19th and 20th century circular and oval gilded frames. The author of this time-defying mosaic is Alain Urrutia.
